IRELAND - LAFRERI SCHOOL. Hibernia sive Irlanda maxima inter brittanniam et hispaniam sita Venice: [ c. 1570]. Engraved map of Ireland, 257 x 168mm, trimmed with original extended margins (Some discolouration to the left of map.) A fine decorative map of Ireland, oriented to the south. Depicted are the island's major towns and 'St.Partick's Purgatory', the pilgrimage site on an island in Lough Derg where the saint nullified the doubts of his potential converts. The seas are decorated with sea monsters and traversed by ships, including a Roman trireme. The map takes its form from George Lily's Britannia Insulae of 1546, and is very similar to Giovanni Francesco Camocio's map of the island, c.1570. Tooley:1939, no.315
