India.- Horsburgh (James, publisher) This Chart of Goa and Murmagoa Roads, Surveyed in 1812, Is Inscribed to Capt. Jas. Horsburgh By his Friend David Inverarity, detailed chart showing from Aguada to Bogda and Ilha Grande, with inset plan of Old Goa, engraving on cream wove paper with watermark of 'T. Edmonds Wycombe' with the date '1835', sheet 990 x 660 mm. (39 x 26 in), three horizontal folds as issued, some light offsetting, minor surface dirt, unframed, East India Company, 1816 [but circa 1835]. ⁂ Rare. James Horsburgh (1762-1836) was a Scottish hydrographer who worked for the British East India Company and charted much of China, Southeast Asia, India and contiguous regions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. We have been unable to find another copy sold at auction. Upon Horsburgh's death, friends and admirers raised a memorial subscription and erected Horsburgh Lighthouse (Chinese: 霍士堡灯塔; Malay: Rumah Api Horsburgh), which still stands today marking the eastern entrance to the Straits of Singapore. It is situated on Pedra Branca island, and is Singapore's earliest lighthouse by date of completion.
