Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-1917 A Chilean Historical and Geographical Society medallion with inscription 'AL PILOTO PARDO/Y COMPANEROS,/SALVAMENTO/DE LA EXPEDICION/SHACKLETON/1916' on the reverse, 1½in. (4cm.) diameter PROVENANCE: Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent. Three months after sailing from South Georgia on the Southern Sky on his first attempt to rescue his marooned men, Shackleton managed to persuade the naval commander at Punta Arenas to loan him the Yelcho , a steel tug, to make another (fourth) attempt to reach Elephant Island. The Yelcho , commanded by the Chilean naval lieutenant Luis Pardo, sailed on 25 August and finally reached the marooned party on 30 August. They returned to Punta Arenas on 3 September, Pardo and Shackleton and his men receiving a heroes welcome: 'The Chileans, proud of their growing navy, had much praise for Captain Pardo, who had taken the Yelcho down, but their applause for Shackleton and his men was unstinted... On 15 September the party boarded the Yelcho once more and cruised up to Valparaiso. Captain Pardo...again in command... The following day Shackleton lectured in Santiago, for the British Red Cross and a Chilean naval charity. His men were presented to the President, and he was given a Chilean order.' (M. and J.
