Hoover, HerbertAn extensive archive comprising a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, photographs and ephemera from the papers of Jeremiah Milbank Includes 77 typed letters signed and 1 autograph letter signed, 7 September 1928–13 May 1964. Also contains correspondence and related material from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and George H.W. Bush as well as Eleanor Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Joseph Kennedy J. Edgar Hoover and others. Letters and miscellany housed in morocco slipcases. Scrapbook custom bound in quarter red morocco over red cloth boards. Several loose items. A rich archive of material documenting the relationship between President Hoover and Jeremiah Milbank, an influential financier, philanthropist, Republican party functionary, and for many years Hoover’s confidant, business partner, and fishing buddy. Milbank served as Eastern Treasurer of the Republican National Committee for the presidential campaign of 1928, which Hoover won, as well as for Hoover’s re-election campaign of 1932, which he lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt. The core of the archive comprises approximately 80 letters from Hoover to Milbank, from the 1920s to the 1960s. These letters span the length of their relationship, beginning with a note from then-Presidential candidate Hoover thanking Milbank for his work on the 1928 campaign, and ending with a note in 1964 acknowledging Milbank’s gift of $250,000 to the Hoover Institution. In several letters Hoover comments on contemporary politics and events, discussing opposition to U.S. entry into World War II, the specter of compulsory military service, New Deal political measures, and in one late letter, disparaging President Kennedy’s political appointments. A detailed listing is available upon request.
