An extensive archive of correspondence and related material addressed to James D Phelan, California Senator and longtime Mayor of San Francisco. His magnificent mansion in Saratoga is now the Montalvo Art Center. The archive includes: 1. DeYoung, M. H., Autograph Note Signed, 1 page, 4to, n.p., October 20, 1904, in full “I see nothing to prevent me from being on the eleven o’clock boat tomorrow. I am rather anxious to see what Tilden is doing so you may expect me,” fine. 2. Tilden, Douglas, Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page, 4to, Oakland, CA, November 12, 1907, in part: “Mrs. Tilden and myself thank you very much for the invitation to be present at the unveiling of the Junipero Serra monument,” fine. 3. Hoover, Herbert, Typed Letter Signed, 1 page, 4to, n.p., March 5, 1920, on his speech at the League of Nations. 4. Grant, Ulysses S. Jr., Autograph Note Signed (“U. S. Grant Jr ,”), 1 page, octavo, n.d., on James D. Phelan office stationery, in full: “I will be more than charmed to accept you polite and thoughtful invitation for a drive today.” 5.
