Full smooth red goatskin (likely by John Matthewman) for Thomas Hollis covers with a small gilt sun surrounded by a single gilt fillet, spine divided into five compartments, vertically lettered in the second and fourth [LOCKE/OF GOV.], the other three with the same tool as the covers, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 8 x 4 3/4 inches (20 x 12 cm); frontispiece (engraved by G.B. Cipriani, trimmed to a single leaf in this copy), xii, 416 pp. Small scuff to rear cover, very minor wear, spine a bit faded, but overall a good example of a Hollis binding, purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop in 1967. Locke was an author favored by Hollis, who edited this edition. This is a good example of one of his gift bindings. Provenance: The Dr. Frank H. Sommer III Trust C
