HOLBEIN, Hans, the younger (1497-1543)] -- Les simulachres & historiees faces de la mort . Lyon: Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel [for Jean and François Frellon], 1538.
HOLBEIN, Hans, the younger (1497-1543)] -- Les simulachres & historiees faces de la mort . Lyon: Melchior and Gaspar Trechsel [for Jean and François Frellon], 1538. 4 o (167 x 119mm). Collation: A-N 4 . 50 leaves only (of 52; lacking B2.3, preliminary text). 41 woodcuts by Hans Lützelburger after Holbein, printers' woodcut device on title colored and heightened with gold, 18 woodcut initials, woodcut cartouche around colophon on the last page. (Lower and outer blank margin of N1 renewed.) INTERLEAVED with another set of leaf B4 and quires C-G from this first edition, constituting the full series of Holbein's Dance of Death cuts, ALL COLORED AND HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD, inserted between G4 and H1 is Trechsel's colophon leaf from the 1538 first edition of Holbein's Historiarum Veteris Instrumenti icones with the woodcut cartouche similarly illuminated. Brown morocco binding gilt, by Lortic (signed and with his ticket), skull and crossbones within a wreath tooled in the center of the covers, hatched fleurons in the corners, spine tooled and lettered in compartments, gilt roll-tooled borders on turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance : PIERRE DELARIVEY (inscribed on title, A Pierre Delarivey Troyen. 1629 , and in the illuminated woodcut on C4r of the King served by Death, A Pierre Delarivey 1629 ), the author of several compilations of Prédictions (1623) and Prognostications (1625), the younger of two astrologers from Troyes of that name and not to be confused with the elder, playwright and translator, who called himself 'champenois' and died in 1619 -- Sotheby's (London 23 June 1969, lot 93) -- Acquired from Colin Franklin 1973. Remarkable copy, combining TWO COMPLETE SETS OF HOLBEIN'S DANCE OF DEATH PRINTS IN FIRST EDITION, one plain in fine impressions, the other colored and heightened in gold. These famous small cuts contain much detail, which require delicate work from a miniaturist. It is hardly possible to assign a precise date to the illumination, which may be contemporary with the publication (1538), but is more likely to relate to Pierre de Larivey's ownership inscription (1619). The dedication to Jeanne de Touszele was written by Jean de Vauzelles, the French verse captions to the illustrations are probably by Gilles Corrozet. FINE CONDITION. Brunet III, 254-5 and Suppl. I, 647-8; Baudrier V, pp. 175-7; R. Mortimer, "Les simulachres & historiees faces de la mort Rosenwald Collection 1010," in: Vision of a Collector (Library of Congress 1991) pp. 192-3. Fact and Fantasy 30.
