"Imprimé dans le monde" [Amsterdam, J.-Fr. Bernard], 1731 12mo: [6]-256 [= 242] pp. (index bound btw title and lf. A2 instead at end; strong soiling on pp. 155-158, occ. in the rest of the vol.). 19th-c. three-quarter marbled calf, mottled paper on covers, flat spine (sm. lacks, lower cover rubbed, wormholes and one wormtrack). Second French translation (1st Fr. 1714) or imitation by Bernard of the "Peccatum originale" (1st 1678) by the Dutch humanist scholar Beverland (1650-1716). In this work, Beverland demonstrates with quotes from the Bible and ancient writers that the original sin was only caused by natural and sexual attraction between man and woman. The work was condamned and censured because of the obscenities contained and Beverland banished from Leiden University and Holland. He was exiled to England. Ref. Barbier II:685. - BGL II:517. - Caillet 1022. - STCN. Read more Read less
