Provenance : the errata neatly corrected in ink throughout, SOME CORRECTIONS IN THE AUTHOR'S HAND -- J.R. Abbey (his accesion no. 7045, dated 23.6.1960, at rear and bookplate; his Sale, Sotheby's, 20 June 1967, lot 1893 to Pickering for £390). A PHILOSOPHER'S PRESENTATION BINDING IN FINE STATE. On the last page of his autobiography, Lord Herbert of Cherbury implied that most copies of De veritate , 'the first purely metaphysical work by an Englishman,' were given away. H.M. Nixon knew of 14 copies in English red morocco presentation bindings, five on the 1633 Latin edition, the other nine on the 1639 edition of the French translation; two of the latter were in J.R. Abbey's collection. Among the group of nine, the present binding alone is without Herbert's crest of a sheaf of arrows. 'All 14 are in red morocco, and come from the same English shop, whose most distinctive tool is a sundial, found on Major Abbey's second copy, on plate XXI of G.D. Hobson's Thirty Bindings and on Bodleian MS Rawlinson A385' ( The Book Collector , Spring 1965, p. 60). Lowndes 1048; STC 13180A: 'not an STC book.'
