HELLER, Joseph. Something Happened. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. 8 o. Original black cloth; dust-jacket. Provenance : JAMES JONES (1921-1977), American writer (presentation inscription). FIRST EDITION of Heller's second novel, which takes the complex paranoiac atmosphere and dark comedy of Catch-22 into Corporate America. AN IMPORTANT LITERARY ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO THE NOVELIST JAMES JONES AND HIS WIFE: "To Jim and Gloria With very best wishes, in literature, in life, and now, as they call it, in academia. Joe Heller 9-4-74." With Gloria's annotation to the front pastedown: "4-16-94 This book belonged to my husband, James Jones Gloria Jones." A review copy, with the publisher's slip and promotional black and white photo of Heller laid in. Though Heller and Jones were at New York University together and made a joint debut in the Atlantic , they did not meet until the early 1960s when Heller visited the Joneses in Paris. In the summer of 1975, the Joneses moved to Long Island, where relationships were initiated or continued with such luminaries as Truman Capote, John Knowles Peter Matthiessen and Heller, all of whom settled full time in the Hamptons area. This copy of Something Happened was inscribed for Jones on the occasion of his return to the States, and his acceptance of a post as visiting professor and writer-in-residence at Florida International University.
