Autograph manuscript poem, unsigned, the "Fin de Fête" by Charlotte Mew in Thomas Hardy's hand.
N.p., N.d.] [on the verso of Royal Society of Literature stationary (2 Bloomsbury Square, W.C.) ]. 3 four-line stanzas, 12 lines in total, 1p., guarded and mounted (115 x 180mm). Condition : one central crease, light toning. The first stanza of the poem reads: Sweetheart, for such a day One mustn’t grudge the score; Here then, it’s all to pay, It’s Good-night at the door. [With:] Autograph letter signed “SCC” to “My Dear Charlotte.” Liverpool St.: 23 Jan. 1928, 10pm. 1p., guarded and mounted (176 x 114 mm). Condition : central crease, some areas of text lightly faded. A warm letter announcing Cockerel’s return home and his apparent sending of “ an enclosed relic of T.H. ” [With:] Autograph fragment signed “SCC.” N.p., n.d. 1p., guarded and mounted (40 x 67 mm). Condition : lightly toned, portion of ink stamp. Likely a post-script note, “ I forgot to say that we found no other poem of any sort copied out by T.H. Where or when did Fin de Fête appear? ” Modern blue paper folder. Provenance : Frederick Baldwin Adams, Jr. (bookplate).
