GRANT, Ulysses S. Engraved document signed ("U. H. Grant"), as Ulysses Hiram Grant, West Point Cadet, West Point, N. Y., 20 June 1843. Also signed by classmate (and future fellow General) Winfield Scott Hancock. Printed by Packard, Govit & Co., Albany, N.Y. 1 page, folio , ON PARCHMENT. The top half of the document shows a robed Greek figure standing before Parthenon, and the text, in three different typefaces, reads: "Dialectic Society, United States Military Academy. Be it known that Joseph J. Reynolds, of the State of Indiana, is entitled to all the rights and privileges of an honorary member of the Dialectic Society. In testimony of which we have caused to be hereunto affixed the Seal of the Society and the Signatures of the President and Secretary." A RARE SIGNATURE AS "ULYSSES HIRAM" FROM GRANT'S SENIOR YEAR AT THE U. S. MILITARY ACADEMY. The Dialectic Society was founded in 1826. It was one of the oldest student societies on the campus by the time Grant arrived at West Point in1839. He arrived as "Ulysses Hiram," transposing his birth name and middle name so the monogram on his trunk would not tread "H.U.G." Yet after his arrival, he learned that the registrar had him mistakenly recorded as "Ulysses Simpson." Grant adopted the government's version after his graduation, making his initials the more appealing and impressive "U.S. Grant."
