Autograph letter signed to Joseph Lehmann, Lneburg, 23 October 1825, 2 pages, 4to , integral address panel (seal tear, minor discolouration, small modern label in upper left corner of first page). Heine apologises for not having written, explaining that, amongst other things, he had been on the point of coming to Berlin himself - 'Und was sind alle Briefe gegen eine Stunde heiterer mndlicher Besprechung?'. He can give no especially edifying news of his poetic activity, owing to a combination of his studies in Gttingen and ill-health, although the situation is now much improved: 'jetzt gehts mir meiner Gesundheit viel besser, rmishe Rechtsantiquitten werden an den Nagel gehngt [...], poetische Fragmente werden vollendet [...], und die Presse wird von mir in Thtigkeit gesetzt werden'. He asks what Lehmann is up to, and whether he is writing poetry ('ob noch immer die Gttinen - darunter versteh' ich nicht blo die Musen - Ihr Haupt beschtzen'). Heine ends with a brief report of his life in Gttingen, and asks whether Gans has returned, covered in glory, from Paris - 'Als ich auf der Nordsee herumschwamm, hrte ich vernehmbar seine Stimme, trotz alle Mhe, die sich Aeolus gab, ihn zu berheulen'.
