London: [Edward Allde and William Jaggard for] Edward White, 1607 [imprint taken from title to book two]. 8 parts in one volume, 4°, general title and title to the second book with woodcut border showing four breeds of horses [McK. and F. 242], titles to books three, five and six with Edward Allde's fleur-de-lys device [McK. 270], woodcut illustrations (lacks the folding woodcut, quire B possibly supplied from another copy, some marginal soiling, occasionally heavy, A1 and A4 repaired at margin, L2 in 7th book with marginal repairs, C1-2 in 8th book stained at margin), old calf (restored, endpapers renewed). Provenance : E4v with contemporary ms note. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE AND IMPORTANT WORK, containing the substance of the author's earlier writings on horses. The title is taken from La Broue's Le Cavalerice Français (1593-94), a work frequently cited by Markham. His own work is divided into eight books, all except the first with separate title-page and dedication to a different person. Book VII contains 102 chapters on the cure of diseases. The last book, referring to tricks used by the cheating horse-courser, was adopted almost verbatim by Thomas Dekker in Lanthorne and Candle-light (1608). The folding woodcut called for by Poynter was issued separately, and is also lacking in the Duke of Gloucester copy. Huth p. 15; Mellon/Podeschi 18; Poynter 19.1; STC 17334.
