Read more George Campbell first visited Spain in 1951 and was so smitten that he spent about half of every year there from then on. Throughout the 1950s and '60s he developed and refined an elegant, rhythmic style of painting - of which this composition based on a village on the island of Tenerife is a particularly fine example - that centres on a Cubist approach to spatial arrangement and is informed by an innate rhythmic sense (he was also an ardent and gifted musician).
