For some reason he identified with Spanish culture from an early age, and he became an accomplished flamenco guitarist. That was no aberration: music was always a passion, and he described the process of painting in musical terms, starting out with the line of tune, as though on piano, and gradually filling it out with orchestration. He actually aspired to be an orchestra conductor when he was young, and the direct depiction of music making of one form or another runs consistently through his work.
