Gemini], Septmeber 1559. 2° (362 x 255mm). 35 engraved plates only (of 40), including 2 folding plates of Adam and Eve, one of them standing, the other with Adam and Eve seated with 6 moveable flaps. (Lacking everything before dedication, C1 and 5 plates, plate of Adam and Eve seated with repaired tear from top to bottom, clean long tear along centre fold, plates stained, text stained, browned or spotted, some margins frayed or with holes, a few marginal repairs, final leaf torn with slight loss of text.) Later calf-backed boards (front cover detached, worn). Third issue of the English version of one of the most important of the many 16th- and 17th-century pirated versions and plagiarisms of Vesalius. According to STC this English edition was derived from Henri de Mondeville but is sometimes erroneously attributed to Geminus. The first Latin edition was a plagarism of Vesalius, with plates copied from Vesalius by Geminus. Geminus emigrated to England around 1540, where he practiced the arts of engraving, printing and instrument making, and served as royal physician to Henry VIII.
