PATER, Walter Horatio (1839-1894). Studies in the History of the Renaissance . London: T. Combe, E.B. Gardner, E. Pickard Hall and J.H. Stacy for Macmillan and Co., 1873. 8° (193 x 125mm). Half title. (Scattered light spotting, short, neatly-repaired tears on P1-3, ?lacking final [?blank] leaf.) Contemporary straight-grained green morocco by Baker & Son, Clifton, gilt edges (a little rubbed and scuffed, boards slightly bowed causing splitting on joints). Provenance : 'WITH , THE PUBLISHER'S , COMPLIMENTS' (blindstamp on title) -- Horatio R. Forbes Brown (inscription on half title 'H.R. Forbes Brown , from J.A. Symonds , Feb: 22. 1873'; armorial bookplate on upper pastedown; manuscript sonnet by Symonds in pencil on lower flyleaf) -- Parke E. Simmons (bookplate on front free endpaper) -- Oscar Benjamin Cintas, Havana (1857-1957, diplomat and collector, bookplate on upper pastedown, dated 1906). FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY SYMONDS TO BROWN, HIS FRIEND, BIOGRAPHER AND LITERARY EXECUTOR, AND WITH A LATER MANUSCRIPT SONNET FOR BROWN. The present copy is presumably that which Symonds reviewed for the The Academy (IV, 15 March 1873, pp.103-105), and was subsequently given to Brown. Symonds must have chanced upon this volume on a later visit to Brown, and added the sonnet addressed to Brown (dated Florence, 14 April 1880); the poem -- which commences 'Old books -- old flowers -- old feelings ...' -- considers the passage of time and the vanity of the scholar's quest in the octet, before returning to a specific memory in the sestet: 'Dearest, I gave you these seven years ago! , I meet them here in Florence; & I write, , Among your books, what you may never know'.
