GARIBALDI, Guiseppe (1807-1882). Autograph manuscript of a poem (fair copy) on the misfortunes of Italy, 'Non tra pomposi e pensili? Vaghi giardini in flore; Non sotto bel marmorei Archi è giammi il mio cuore' 7 stanzas, 42 lines, written in ink on blue lined paper, 2½ pages folio , blank integral leaf, an annotation below the verses recording that Garibaldi wrote them out in 1855 for Emma Roberts. The poem, in which Garibaldi says he would prefer to see Italy in flames rather than crushed beneath a vandal's feet ('prià de vederti trepida sotto il baston di un vandolo') was composed in South America in the 1840s. It was published with an English translation in the Times in 1863.
