Beschreibung:

France - French Revolution] - DEPEREY, G. - Vryheid, gelykheid, broederschap, de dood der tyrannen [2nd ed.]. Amsterdam, D.M. Langeveld, 1794, 4to, wr. (worn & loose), 16 pp. Good uncut copy.
Translation of “Le vérificateur général des assignats”, on counterfeit assignats, mainly produced in England. Assignats were paper money issued by the National Assembly in France from 1789 to 1796. Originally meant as bonds, they evolved into a currency used as legal tender. As there was no control over the amount to be printed, the value of the assignats exceeded that of the confiscated properties. This caused massive hyperinflation. They were also counterfeited on a large scale, in order to undermine the credibility of the French state. Ref. STCN (1, copy only in USA). Joined , a number of original assignats : 3 sheets of coarse paper with 40 assignats of "cinq livres" (uncut), 1 sheet signed "L. Prevost". - 1 sheet (folded) with 10 assignats of "dix livres". - 1 sheet (stained) with 2 assignats of "cent vingt cinq £.". - 1 “Promesse de mandat territorial (…) bon pour cent Francs”, printed in red, signed ‘"Bouck". - 1 similar of "vingt cinq francs", signed "Deschamps’". - 6 single small assignats.
