FOLENGO, Teofilo (1496?-1544). Opus Merlini Cocaii . Venice: Dominic de Imbertus, 1585. 12 o (134 x 80 mm). Woodcut initials and illustrations. (Title-page with repaired tear at outer margin and a few short tears along gutter.) Contemporary vellum with hand-painted decoration on back cover (hinges cracked, a few smal stains). Folengo's collection of humorous verse stories were written in his youth after he had run away with a young woman he loved. Having abandoned his life as a monk, he wrote the verses to earn money, which, unfortunately, largely failed. The nature of the stories, as well as their tone, though, were extremely popular and did earn Folengo considerable fame.
