Strikingly illustrated in red and black by Gyo Fujikawa at age 23, the first book appearance of her work, with colored endpapers and 25 full-page plates. Inscribed. The first book illustrated by the young artist after her graduation from the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles was also probably the first book illustrated by a Nisei – American-born Japanese. Over the next 25 years, the Berkeley artist (whose family spent World War II in an internment camp) would do much commercial work – all unsigned and uncredited - as art director of an advertising agency and illustrator for Walt Disney (She notably designed the program for Disney’s classic movie Fantasia). Not until 1957 did she illustrate her second children’s book, the start of three decades as author and illustrator of more than 50 books (and even a few postage stamps) before her death in 1998.
