FINE BINDING] TOUSSAINT, FRANZ. Le Jardin des Caresses . Paris: H. Piazza, 1921. From an edition of 700, this is one of 50 (stamp numbered 44), with a double suite of the plates before letters interspersed, one in black and white and one in color. Full cream morocco signed by [Charles] De Samblanx on the endpaper, upper cover with lettering in Arabic in blue onlay, both covers with a frame in blue, green, olive and orange morocco accentuated in gilt, spine tooled to match, dentelles with the same frame against a seme of small gilt dots, pale blue silk pastedown and doublures, top edge gilt, original wrappers bound in, housed in a custom box. 8 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches (21 x 16 cm); [144, [2] pp., with ten illustrations by Leon Carré in colors., pages with gold decoration. Case a bit worn, the binding minutely toned, a fine copy of a very pretty book. Bookplate on reverse of free endpaper, name discreetly erased. Charles de Samblanx (1855-1943) was a Belgian binder of considerable renown, who executed a very attractive binding for this work illustrated by Leon Carré, a painter who illustrated numerous works of oriental fantasy.
