EDWARDS, Sydenham Teak (ca 1769-1819), continued by John LINDLEY (1799-1865). The Botanical Register: Consisting of Coloured Figures of Exotic Plants, Cultivated in British Gardens; with their History and Mode of Treatment . London: James Ridgway, 1815-47. 33 volumes, 8 o (234 x 150 mm). Approximately 2,700 engraved plates after drawings by Edwards and others, most hand-colored, many folding. Contemporary half diced russia, marbled boards (some chipping to spines, some covers detached). Provenance : W. Cushing (signature dated 1836 on first title). FIRST EDITION of Edwards's monumental Botanical Register . Edwards was a botanical artist who had worked for twenty-seven years for Curtis's Botanical Magazine . In 1815, he started this rival publication. The text for the first 14 volumes is by John Bellenden-Ker and the remainder is by John Lindley. The present is a complete run, save the appendix to volumes 1-23. Dunthorne 108; Great Flower Books p.84; Nissen BBI 2379; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 1625. Sold as a periodical, not subject to return. (33)
