BURTON, Richard Francis First Footsteps in East Africa; or, An Exploration of Harar. London: Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1856. 8 o (211 x 133 mm). Two maps and 4 colored lithographic plates, with half-title. (Without Appendix IV, light spotting on half-title and frontispiece verso). Patterned dull violet cloth, covers with blind-stamped border, gilt illustration on upper cover repeated in blind on lower cover, spine fully gilt, all gilt edges, (dampstained, spine faded). FIRST EDITION, second issue (?), This copy a binding variant in a School Prize Binding. As Penzer notes, a variety of bindings were used on what were "prize" issues of this work. The cloth of this copy conforms with Penzer's first issue but not its size. He does not note, however, whether the prize bindings were printed and bound up with the first or with the second issue of the work. As Appendix IV was withdrawn from the first issue, its absence in this copy does not signify it is a late issue. Penzer p. 60-63. Casada 35. Spink 16.
