Half-title in vol.I, titles in red and black with engraved vignettes, 98 engraved plates, plans and maps only (of ?102), 92 folding or double-page, 10 engraved head-pieces, 6 engraved initials, 8 letterpress tables, 5 folding. (Some browning, occasional neat repairs.) NEAR-CONTEMPORARY ROMAN RED MOROCCO BOUND FOR POPE PIUS VI, gilt, the covers with elaborate rococo border including foliage, flowers, stars and shell tools within roll-tooled border, with centrally placed papal arms, spines in seven compartments, lettered in one, a second with green morocco lettering-piece, the others with repeat decoration made up from various small tools, g.e. (some scuffing to extremities, neat repairs to corners and spines, occasional slight damage to surface of leather, four free endpapers neatly excised). Provenance : Pope Pius VI (Giannangelo Braschi, 1717-1799, binding); duca di Cassano Serra (armorial bookplate). A fine set with a distinguished provenance. The binding shares a number of tools with lots 331, 372 and 447 from the Kissner Collection (our rooms 3-5 October 1990), but the binder remains unidentified. The correct plate count is unclear, the lot is therefore sold not subject to return. (3)
