(11 11/16 x 7 7/8 in.), modern vellum over boards, a few leaves at beginning and at end on guards, about 12 leaves with tears and repair, mainly in margins but crossing text on A4v and Q4, upper inner margin of last leaf T4 patched, final seven leaves with severe wormtrack at upper gutter margin, scattered spotting, browning, occasional dampstains. Collation : *4, A-R6, S-T4. 114 leaves (including *4 blank), with foliation and signatures. Gothic type, shoulder notes in italic. Titlepage with two small woodcuts (a man holding aloft a flask, a physician bleeding a woman) and a large rectangular cut of doctors conferring in a landscape, seeing a patient and distilling medicaments, numerous woodcuts (one full-page, many half-page) including a large series depicting dissections of the head and torso (some with dates 1536 and 1537), plus many small cuts of foods, animals, plants and other subjects, woodcut device on T4v, decorative capitals. One of the most important anatomical works published before Vesalius. Dryander (also known as Eichmann), a friend of Vesalius, was a professor of surgery at Marburg and one of the first anatomists to prepare illustrations after actual dissections. Some of the woodcuts were previously used in Dryander's Anatomiae (Marburg 1537) and Anatomia capitis humani (Marburg 1536). Others had appeared in the author's edition of Mondino, published the previous year. The two large cuts of the vascular system and the cutaneous veins of the back (on B1r and B2r) are new. The non-anatomical cuts have been attributed to the school of Hans Brosamer The present work, besides Dryander's detailed treatise on human anatomy, contains descriptions of the virtues of plants, the nature of various foods and beverages, directions for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, including the plague, and instructions for midwifery. Not in Adams or BM/STC German ; NLM/Durling 1216 (lacking blank and with mutilated leaf). Waller ; Wellcome .
