ca 1859-1861. Black leather body formed into one integral unit by stitching. Brass planchet of a patriotic eagle clutching a painted red, white, and blue shield. Infantry insignia surrounded by leaf ornamentation. Red, white and blue cockade complete with beige pompom. Interior with wide black leather sweatband and underside of visor painted green. This is one of the 10,000 Model 1860 French Infantry helmets obtained by the Americans. [See Langelier, 2002: 124]. Provenance: Ex Pete and Jackie Kersten Collection Condition: Black leather is in excellent condition. Gilt on plachet is peeling around insignia. Front of visor has 1" crack. Interior liner shows heavy usage.
