DRAKE, Sir Francis (ca 1540-1596)]. NICHOLS, Philip. Sir Francis Drake Reuiued: Calling vpon this Dull or Effeminate Age, to folowe his Noble Steps for Golde & Silver, By this Memorable Relation, of the Rare Occurrences (never yet declared to the World) in a Third Voyage, made by him into the West-Indies . London: E. A[llde] for William Bourne, 1626. 4 o (187 x 128 mm, but with title folding at bottom to 207 x 120 mm). Engraved title vignette portrait of Drake holding navigational instruments, his heraldic bearings to the right, errata leaf N4 present. (Title supplied from another, taller copy, backed with linen, folded to size and with fore-margin renewed, some headlines, and shoulder notes slightly shaved.) Dark green morocco gilt paneled, gilt spine, edges gilt, by W. Pratt (front free endpaper detached). Provenance : Anson Phelps Stokes (1838-1913), New York banker, father of; Rev. Anson Phelps Stokes (1874-1958), clergyman, educator and historian (bookplate); Joseph M. Roebling (sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 28 April 1981, lot 121). FIRST EDITION, dedicated by the explorer's nephew, Sir Francis Drake, to Charles I and including the explorer's dedicatory epistle to Queen Elizabeth, dated 1592. A classic narrative of Drake's famous West-Indies voyage of 1572-73, his alliance with the native Cimarrones and their joint attacks on the Spanish fort of Nombre de Diós, on the isthmus of Panama, a staging point for the Spanish treasure fleets. Drake's first attempt to take the city was repulsed; but in April 1573 his small force intercepted a Spanish pack train laden with a fortune in freshly mined gold and silver.
