Paris: Jean Gesselin, 1627. 8° (166 x 103 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initial and head-piece. (Title with upper fore-corner renewed, some marginal worming, occasionally repaired and touching letters.) Contemporary vellum (slightly cockled and soiled). Provenance : Rupellensis (La Rochelle) Library (inscription dated 1782 on title). First augmented French edition. This is the first separate appearance of the second circumnavigation and the first English voyage around the world, translated by F. de Louvencourt, Sieur de Vauchelles and enlarged from his 1613 edition of Part I only. ”The translation … of the narrative of Drake's voyage round the world, 1577-1580, as printed by Hakluyt in a supplement to his Principall Navigations , 1589. The work has been ascribed to one Francis Pretty, but... it was in fact compiled, probably by Hakluyt, from several briefer eyewitness accounts, one being Francis Fletcher's original narrative. It is not by Drake...” (H.P. Kraus, Sir Francis Drake (Amsterdam 1970), 44 (the 1641 edition). The bibliography in D. B. Quinn's "Sir Francis Drake as Seen by His Contemporaries" shows that no map was issued with either this or the 1613 French editions. Alden & Landis 627/20; Brunet II, 831; JCB 2 (I): p. 208; Sabin 20845 (the JCB copy); Streeter sale I:38 (the 1641 edition).
