DONNE, John (1572-1631). Paradoxes, Problemes, Characters, Written by D r . Donne, Dean of Pauls: To which is added a Book of Epigrams: Written in Latin by the same Author...As also, Ignatius his Conclave, A Satyr. , London: T[homas] N[ewcomb] for Humphrey Mosely, 1652. 12 o (152 x 82mm.). General title-page within border of typographical ornaments, separate title for Ignatius , each page within ruled border, woodcut capitals, head- and tail-pieces, terminal blanks L3 and L4 present (a few pages trimmed closely at top, shaving topmost printer's rule, blank lower margin of F5 [ Ignatius title] unevenly torn). THIRD EDITION with seven Problems, two Characters and 59 spurious epigrams added to the 11 paradoxes and ten problems in the 1633 printings of the Juvenilia (Keynes 43 and 44). The first quire in Keynes's variant issue (border of typographical ornaments instead of acorns, A3v with an additional adulatory passage apparently dropped in the other variant); this issue now established as the earlier of the two, as noted by R.S. Pirie in notes to the catalogue of the 1972 Grolier Club exhibition (no.29). Keynes 46; Grolier Donne 28; Wing D1861. [ Bound with :] DONNE, John. Essayes in Divinity.,,,Being Several Disquisitions, Interwoven with Meditations and Prayers...Now made publick by his Son..., London: T[homas] M[axey] for Richard Marriot, 1651. Title-page within border of typographical ornaments, each page within ruled border. (Leaves A2-6 cancelled to suppress the dedication to Sir Henry Vane the younger, as in all but five recorded copies, lacks the inserted "To the Reader" leaf, small tear to title affecting one letter). FIRST EDITION. Evidently when Donne's son decided to issue the work (which includes, in addition to the essays, four important prayers) with the 1652 Paradoxes , he felt obliged to remove the dedication to Sir Henry Vane Jr. so that the composite volume could be dedicated to Lord Francis Newport (dedicatee of the Paradoxes ). The uncancelled dedication survives in only five recorded copies. Grolier Donne 24; Keynes 50; Wing D180.
