DONNE, John. Juvenilia or Certaine Paradoxes and Problemes . London: E. P. for Henry Seyle, 1633. 4° (178 x 125mm), woodcut device on title, woodcut and typographical headpieces, woodcut initials, with the initial blank (lightly browned and spotted). Late 19th-century boards. Provenance : Thomas Edward Watson (bookplate; by descent to the present owners). SECOND EDITION (rarer than the first of the same date) of Donne's 'clever and entertaining trifles' written in about 1600 and circulating in manuscript until after his death. They consist of twenty-one short essays entitled, inter alios , 'A Defence of Womens Inconstancy', 'That Women ought to paint', 'That it is possible to find some vertue in some Women', 'Why have Bastards best Fortune?', 'Why did the Devill reserve Iesuites till these latter dayes' and 'Why hath the common Opinion afforded Women Soules'. The book was licensed by Sir Henry Herbert, Master of the Revels, on 25 October 1632 and three weeks later he was summoned to the Star Chamber to explain why he warranted 'the booke of D. Duns paradoxes to bee printed'. In the event the license leaves in the second edition were never printed and, to add insult to injury, the publisher actually added twenty-three lines, of an offensive nature, to the bastardy 'problem' which even in the first edition was extremely insulting to the Court. It is probable that this second edition was particularly suppressed by Laud. STC 7044; Keynes 44.
