In 1919, a year marked by Nijinski's disastrous mental breakdown, Diaghilev created The three-cornered hat and revised the Firebird . His correspondent Misia Sert (1872-1950, born Marie-Sophie Godebski, in Russia but of Polish descent), was a noted beauty and friend to many artists and musicians. It was in her Paris apartment that Diaghilev, with Stravinksy and Poulenc, heard Ravel give a performance of his first version of La Valse and insulted him by his indifferent reception of it.
