ANNE (1665-1714), Queen of Great-Britain . Autograph letter signed to an unidentified royal correspondent (Louis XIV?), St James's, 5 May 1711, in French, 2 pages, 4to , blank integral leaf. A plea on behalf of Victor-Amadeus II of Savoy, pressing her correspondent to put him in possession of his estates as soon as possible, because of the importance for the allies of the Duke going on campaign shortly (in the War of the Spanish Succession): '[M]y zeal for the good of the common cause has prompted me to write to you on the subject, the more so because this step will not only remove many difficulties and causes of jealousy, but it will also greatly increase your glory in the world'. Victor-Amadeus, an astute diplomat as well as military commander, was supported by England in his claims to a number of places in Northern Italy and elsewhere during the war in which he supported first Spain and France and then, for a time, Austria. The French invaded Piedmont but were driven out before the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 gave him the Kingdom of Sicily.
