Lot of 6, including: half plate daguerreotype portrait of an aged, distinguished looking gentleman, housed under mat stamped lower right, J. Gurney/ 560(?) Broadway. The daguerreotype is uncased. Jeremiah Gurney first appeared in the New York City directories as a daguerreian in 1843-1844 with a gallery location at 189 Broadway. His gallery remained at the same address through 1853, although the residence address changed from time to time. Two sixth plate daguerreotypes, including a portrait of a teen-aged boy and a portrait of a young woman, both under mats stamped Anson/ 589 Broadway. Each daguerreotype is housed in a half case. Rufus Anson operated a successful studio in the highly competitive New York City market between 1851 and 1867. Sixth plate daguerreotype of a serious looking young man, housed in full case under mat stamped lower left, J.W. Thompson/ 551 B.Way. N.Y. Josiah W. Thompson was first reported as a daguerreian from 1846-1848 in New York City, and this portrait was most likely taken around 1853-1855 when he operated his gallery at the 551 Broadway address. Anonymous sixth plate daguerreotype of an aged, stern looking gentleman, housed in velvet, book-style case, the front cover almost fully separated from spine. Ninth plate ambrotype of a young gentleman wearing a large, striped bow tie, housed in full, book-style case. Condition: Light to moderate wear to daguerreotypes. Ambrotype with some significant wear to plate.
