CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718). Atlante Veneto; nel quale si contiene la descrittione geografica, storica, sacra, profana & politica degl'Imperii, Regni, Provincie, e Stati dell'Universo . - Isolario descrittione geografico-historia... Tomo II dell' Atlante Veneto . Venice, 1695-97. 2 volumes, 2 o (470 x 340 mm), comprising vol. 1 and vol. 2, part 1 only of the Atlante Veneto . Vol. I: 37 sheets [double- and single-page] of maps, 30 engraved plates; vol. II: in 2 parts, 41 map sheets and 19 plates, including "Isolario." (Some occasional pale staining and soiling.) Contemporary sheep (few repairs); quarter morocco slipcases. The Atlante Veneto (designated on the first title here) is the principal volume of some thirteen cartographic works published by Coronelli up to 1701. The present copy does not conform to the list of maps in Phillips: in vol. 1, of the 37 maps he lists, this copy lacks 10 and adds 8 maps (and 2 diagrams?); in vol. 2, of the 45 maps he lists, the present copy replaces 4 maps, adds 2 maps where 4 pages are lacking from the Phillips pagination and adds 4 maps to those not in the pagination. A detailed description of this copy is available on request. The first volume is the most important cartographically, as the maps of the glove and the southern part of Asia show for the first time the northern and western coast of Australia according to the voyages of Edels, Nuyts, and Tasman (1618-54). The map of the Pacific Ocean delineates the coasts of New Zealand and Tasmania, based on Tasman's voyage published in 1660. "Coronelli's maps are distinguised by their fine engraving" (Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America I:136 and II:434-5). Phillips 521; Sold as an atlas, not subject to return. (2)
