A RARE COOLIDGE PARDON, FOR A MAN CONVICTED OF SMUGGLING CHINESE ACROSS THE BORDER WITH MEXICO "...Whereas Joseph W. La Pointe pleaded guilty...to smuggling Chinese into the United States from Mexico...and was sentenced to imprisonment ...and, Whereas [he] has served his term...and it has been made to appear to me that since his discharge he has conducted himself as a law-abiding citizen; I, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America...do hereby grant...[him] a full and unconditional pardon for the purpose of restoring his civil rights...."
