COMPOSITE ATLAS OF THE COUNTIES OF NORTHERN ENGLAND. London: [1768 - 1774]. 2° (600 x 400mm). A composite atlas of 8 maps on 47 sheets, including the principal county surveys of Northumberland, Durham, Westmoreland, Cumberland, and Yorkshire, by Thomas Jefferys and others, hand-coloured in outline. (Some light spotting). Old half morocco, restored. Provenance : Fullerton of Carstairs (armorial bookplate); John Henry Warre (bookplate). A fine composite atlas of the large scale surveys of the Northern Counties of England, including the major northern surveys of Thomas Jefferys. Thomas Jefferys was one of the most dedicated mapmakers and county surveyors of the 18th century. Although it was the Society of Arts Prize of 1759 for accurate new county maps that created the impetus for the remapping of England at county level, it was inevitably down to local subscribers to fund the projects. Thomas Jefferys was the master of this field. Despite going bankrupt in November 1766 due to the escalating costs of the field surveys and selling his stock at auction in 1767, he was able to refinance and had completed seven new county surveys by the time of his death in 1771, including Hodskinson and Donald's Cumberland, the Yorkshire and Westmoreland surveys in this volume. The volume comprises: 1. Armstrong, Andrew, and son. A New and Correct Map of the County of Northumberland, reduced from their large map published in 1769, to be sold only to the subscribers for the large one . London: 22 April, 1770. Engraved index sheet with new title and map on nine sheets, each 730 x 560 mm, hand-coloured in outline. 2.Armstrong, Andrew and Thomas Jefferys. The County of Durham . London: 15 February, 1768. Engraved map on four sheets, each 555 x 730mm, hand-coloured in outline. 3. Jefferys, Thomas. The County of Westmoreland surveyed . London: February, 1770. Engraved map on four sheets, each 560 x 730mm, hand-coloured in outline. 4. Hodskinson, Joseph and Thomas Donald. The County of Cumberland surveyed . London: 25 March, 1774. Engraved map on 6 sheets, each 750 x 600 mm. 5. Jefferys, Thomas. The County of York surveyed . London: 25 March, 1772. Engraved map of Yorkshire on 20 sheets, each 730 x 600mm, hand-coloured in outline. 6.Three additional maps comprising a north western sheet from a map of England, c. 1770; A Bowles and Sayer reissue of Kitchen's map of Westmoreland, 1760; A Carrington Bowles and Bowles reissue of Kitchen's map of Durham. (3)
