COLETTE, Sidonie Gabrielle (1873-1954). Autograph letter signed to Violet Trefusis, n.p. [Paris], n.d. [1948], in French , commenting on news that Violet like herself had recently had a minor accident, 'Chere Madame et Geranium, j'espère que vous souffrez moins que moi', referring to her husband, Maurice Goudeket, and a visit to Violet's house, 2 pages, 4° . Together with a copy of Colette's book Prisons et Paradis (Paris 1932) inscribed by the author 'A Violette prison, ou paradis? elle ne saurait, je pense, être l'un sans l'autre, ni l'autre sans l'un, -- sa vieille amie Colette'. The letter, charming, humorous and friendly, proposing to visit Violet at La Tour de St. Loup if not this year then the next, recalls an earlier occasion, 'Cette belle tour de St. Loup, et ses coussins de tous les roses! Et les bois voisins étaient pleins de fraises sauvages'. On meeting Violet of the first time in 1924 Colette is said to have exclaimed 'Violette? Ah non, plutôt Geranium!', and continued to address her by this nickname. She recalled their friendship in Mes Cahiers , and Violet Trefusis wrote of Colette in Prelude to Misadventure . (2)
