CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE. Autograph postscript (complete in itself) to a letter signed ("S.L. Clemens") to an unnamed recipient (a family friend or relative), n.p. [Europe], 9 February 1895. 2 pages, 8vo, in purple ink on pages one and four of integral leaves, a tiny marginal fold hole . "P.S. I didn't know it, but Mrs. Clemens ([his wife Livy] doesn't want anybody to know she is thinking of dumping two of our little girls upon her sister [Susan Crane] on top of the hill near Elmira for the summer. She wants to find out privately first, whether they would be an inconvenience to Mrs. Crane or not...So if you should innocently go & mention it to Rice [Clemens's doctor Clarence Rice?], you see, the cat might get out of the bag; for Mrs. Crane runs down every little while & buys Rice's professional help, & he might happen to mention the matter to her. She & Rice are great friends. Rice breeds some kind of an animal in her nose -- an octopus, I think -- & then charges her for letting on [sic] to take it out. He is the most ingenious cuss! I finished revising and completing Joan [ Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc , published in 1896] yesterday evening, & shall take the MS along when I sail the 23rd. Will you warn Harry that his uncle Sammy is coming over to see about that wall paper..." (2)
