CIVIL WAR]. FONTAINE, LAMAR. Autograph manuscript signed ("Lamar Fontaine Co. J. 2nd Va. Cav. C.S.A.") of the ballad "All Quiet Along the Potomac, tonight," written in 1861 [this ms. copied April 1892]. 3 pages, large 8vo, on rectos only. Page 1 titled "Lines suggested, while standing over the dead body of a loved comrade, killed by a bullet fired across the Potomac by a treacherous hireling foe, Leesburg, Va. Augst. 9th 1861." Comprising 44 lines of Fontaine's ballad commencing: "'All quiet along the Potomac' they say, Except here and there a stray picket, Is shot as he walks on his beat, to and fro, By a rifleman hid in a thicket..." and ending "All's quiet along the Potomac, tonight, No sound, save the rush of the river, While soft falls the dew, on the face of the dead; That picket's 'off duty' forever." Five 10-line stanzas of Private Dalzell's angry anti-Confederate verses. On page 1, Dalzell adds a footnote: "On the Gettysburg field, July 3. 1863, a wounded rebel Colonel cursed me and said,"If we had defeated you, we'd make every damned one of you Slaves!" (2)
