C.S.A.") of the ballad "All Quiet Along the Potomac, tonight," written in 1861 [this ms. copied April 1892]. 3 pages, large 8vo, on rectos only. Page 1 titled "Lines suggested, while standing over the dead body of a loved comrade, killed by a bullet fired across the Potomac by a treacherous hireling foe, Leesburg, Va. Augst. 9th 1861." Comprising 44 lines of Fontaine's ballad commencing: "'All quiet along the Potomac' they say, Except here and there a stray picket, Is shot as he walks on his beat, to and fro, By a rifleman hid in a thicket..." and ending "All's quiet along the Potomac, tonight, No sound, save the rush of the river, While soft falls the dew, on the face of the dead; That picket's 'off duty' forever." An affecting lyric, widely sung by Confederate and Union soldiers. RARE. -- FONTAINE. Autograph letter signed, Lyon, Mississippi, 15 April 1892. 1 page, 4to, tipped to another sheet . Forwarding the above fair copy to a northern lady who had requested one. -- DALZELL, J.M. Five 10-line stanzas of Private Dalzell's angry anti-Confederate verses.
