AMHERST, JEFFREY, Baron . Autograph letter signed TO SIR WILLIAM JOHNSON New York, 6 September 1762. 1 page, folio, integral blank . AMHERST ANNOUNCES THE BRITISH CAPTURE OF HAVANA. A key letter from Amherst, Governor General and Commander of British forces in North America, who had collaborated with Johnson (1715-1774) on the capture of French posts at Ticonderoga and Crown Point (1759) and the city of Montreal (1760), passes on news of the British triumph at Havana: "'Tis with the highest joy and satisfaction that I can inform you of the Reduction of the Havannah...the Moro fort was taken by Storm, on the 30th July, very much to the Honor & Credit of the Troops; and on the 13th August, the Havannah, with its dependencies Surrendered by Capitulation, and is now added to His Majesty's Conquests. The Fatigues the Troops have Undergone, during a long Siege, are not to be described; and the Spirit & Resolution with which they have Carried on the Different Operations, in that Climate, are not to be Equalled...."
