Churchill (Winston Spencer). Lord Randolph Churchill, second edition, inscribed on the half-title 'To Vice Admiral Ballard from Winston S. Churchill 13 Nov. 1921', photogravure portrait, margins a little spotted, contemporary crushed brown half morocco, gilt spine (slightly faded), 1907 George Alexander Ballard joined Naval Intelligence in 1902, he has been documented as 'a man of great intellectual power and character'. When Churchill took office in October 1911 he pressed for Ballard to be the next Director of Naval Intelligence, but he was considered too junior for this post. Nevertheless he continued to work closely with Churchill.
