Churchill October 1933"; vol.II: "To David from Winston Oct. 21 1934"; vol.III: "L.G. from Winston Oct. 1936"; vol.IV: "To L. G. from Winston August 1938." A remarkable association of Britain's two great wartime Prime Ministers. In 1938 Lloyd George described their relationship as "the longest friendship in British politics." He welcomed Churchill when he crossed the House to sit with the Liberals in 1904, but they drifted apart when Churchill rejoined the Tories in the 1920s. Their shared hatred of Chamberlain and Baldwin reunited their interests in the late 1930s, and Churchill pressed Lloyd George--without success--to join his coalition government in 1940. The Welsh Wizard could not quite bring himself to be Churchill's subordinate. After Lloyd George's death Churchill said, "our intimate and agreeable companionship was never darkened...by any serious spell of even political hostility." Woods A40(a). (4)
