Plates, maps, plans and illustrations. Original plum cloth, spines titled in gilt, Marlborough arms in gilt on sides, top edges gilt (spines of vols.I-III sunfaded, also affecting top edge and joints of vol.I). Provenance : Sotheby's, 11 July 1996, lot 402. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPIES, ALL VOLUMES INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL TO HIS PRIVATE SECRETARY EDDIE MARSH. Volume I-III are inscribed in the month of their publication, volume IV is inscribed in August 1938, a month before its publication on 2 September 1938. Edward Marsh (1872-1953) was Churchill's Private Secretary in all of his public offices up until 1929, and remained a close friend and regular visitor in the 1930s. All volumes are inscribed on the front endpaper, 'Eddie from Winston', volume I dated October 1933, volume II 21 October 1934, volume III October 1936, and volume IV August 1938 (signature a little smeared). Woods lists the publication of volume IV as 2 September 1938. Woods A40(a).
