FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY of Chappe d'Auteroche's illustrated account of Siberia. The French priest and astronomer travelled to Siberia in 1761 to observe the transit of Venus. His account of the trip, given in volume I, describes the meteorology, climate, fauna, minerals, and -- somewhat controversially -- the society of the region. Volume II contains his translation of Stepan Petrovich Krasheninnikov's Opisanie zemli Kamchatki (St Petersburg: 1755), an important work largely relating to the North-West coast of America. Chapter 10 of the second part, 'De l'Amérique', is based on the notes of Steller, and forms one of the earliest printed narratives about Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.
