CHAPPE D'AUTEROCHE, Jean-Baptiste (1728-1769) and Stepan Petrovich KRASHENINNIKOV (1713-1755). Voyage en Sibérie, fait ... en 1761. Paris: Debure [imprimerie de Didot], 1768. 2 text volumes in 3 and atlas volume, 4° (331 x 237) and 2° (596 x 460mm). Text: engraved frontispiece by J.B. Tilliard after J.B. le Prince, engraved table, 55 engraved plates and plans, 4 double-page, by J.P. le Bas, Tilliard, A. de St Aubin, C. Baquoy, et al. after le Prince, C. de Fecamp, and J.M. Moreau, engraved and woodcut vignettes. Atlas: engraved frontispiece by Tilliard after le Prince, 30 engraved maps and plans, double-page or folding, some hand-coloured in outline. (Text vols. with all-over browning to a few quires and occasional plates, persistent browning and slight soiling at margins, occasional stains, piece torn from bottom margin of II:4K3 and III:H3.) Text: contemporary red morocco, gilt fillet border a la Du Seuil on covers with fleuron at each corner, gilt spine compartments directly lettered and with repeated knot tool, gilt turn-ins and edges, spot-marbled endpapers (neat restoration to spines, joints cracked but cords firm, covers darkened at edges). Atlas: contemporary blue boards (rebacked, new vellum corner tips and rear endpaper). Provenance : Baron Stanley (19th-century armorial bookplate in text vols.) -- Paul Tibbe (20th-century bookplate in atlas). FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY of Chappe d'Auteroche's illustrated account of Siberia. The French priest and astronomer travelled to Siberia in 1761 to observe the transit of Venus. His account of the trip, given in volume I, describes the meteorology, climate, fauna, minerals, and -- somewhat controversially -- the society of the region. Volume II contains his translation of Stepan Petrovich Krasheninnikov's Opisanie zemli Kamchatki (St Petersburg: 1755), an important work largely relating to the North-West coast of America. Chapter 10 of the second part, 'De l'Amérique', is based on the notes of Steller, and forms one of the earliest printed narratives about Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The engraving of 'Baidare ou Canot Americain' is a notable early depiction of a native North American. BM(NH) I, p. 336; Brunet I, 1798; Cox I, p. 352; Hill 277; Lada-Mocarski 12. (4)
