CARION, Johann (1499-1537). Tertia pars chronici . Edited by P. Melanchthon and C. Peucer. Lyons: J. de Tournes and G. Gazeau, 1564.
CARION, Johann (1499-1537). Tertia pars chronici . Edited by P. Melanchthon and C. Peucer. Lyons: J. de Tournes and G. Gazeau, 1564. 16° in half-sheets (125 x 83mm). (Title faintly spotted.) CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN BINDING BY THE 'LAST BINDER' FOR JEAN GROLIER: gold-tooled olive goatskin over thin pasteboard, azure tools [Nixon, LB 4, 20a-b, 22a-b and others], title lettered on upper cover, 'Grolierii et amicorum' on lower cover, spine with 4 double-bands, single flower-head in 3 compartments, gilt and blind hatching at head and foot of spine, gilt edges (tiny areas of wear, upper hinge expertly restored but starting); 20th-century half tan morocco case. Provenance : Jean Grolier (1479-1565; binding) -- Bergeret (sale 1858, lot 2278) -- Chédeau (sale Paris, 3 April 1865, lot 1156) -- L. Potier, bookseller (sale Paris, 29 March 1870, lot 1806) -- Gabriel Kamensky (sale Sotheby's 1 Dec.? 1874, lot 39 to F.S. Ellis) -- Charles H. Craufurd (sale 10 July 1876, lot 248 to Pickering & Chatto) -- Cortland Bishop (sale NY, 23 January 1939, lot 243, to:) -- Douglas M. Moffat (sale Christie's NY, 14 May 1985, lot 446). THE SMALLEST BOOK IN GROLIER'S CELEBRATED LIBRARY, and one of a small number bound for him by his 'Last Binder'. Carion's chronicle enjoyed immense popularity for over a century, particularly among Protestants, given Melanchthon and Peucer as its editors. Various parts appeared as separate editions, as is the case for the present edition of part III, and indeed de Tournes and Gazeau did not publish any other parts. Not in Baudrier; Cartier, de Tournes 504, variant. Austin 83; Hobson Renaissance Book Collecting , app. 1c, p.229.
