CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN BINDING BY THE 'LAST BINDER' FOR JEAN GROLIER: gold-tooled olive goatskin over thin pasteboard, azure tools [Nixon, LB 4, 20a-b, 22a-b and others], title lettered on upper cover, 'Grolierii et amicorum' on lower cover, spine with 4 double-bands, single flower-head in 3 compartments, gilt and blind hatching at head and foot of spine, gilt edges (tiny areas of wear, upper hinge expertly restored but starting); 20th-century half tan morocco case. THE SMALLEST BOOK IN GROLIER'S CELEBRATED LIBRARY, and one of a small number bound for him by his 'Last Binder'. Carion's chronicle enjoyed immense popularity for over a century, particularly among Protestants, given Melanchthon and Peucer as its editors. Various parts appeared as separate editions, as is the case for the present edition of part III, and indeed de Tournes and Gazeau did not publish any other parts.
