albumen image, on boudoir style mount 8.5 x 5.5", ca 1885. An anonymous image of the Spring Valley Ranch, an important stage coach stop -- the first (ca 1876) building established between present-day Rapid City and Sturgis, S.D. It was used by the Sidney (Nebraska)-Deadwood Stage Line and the Northwestern Stage Company. Torn down in 1924, this image shows Gardner and his family posed in front of the main building, probably not long after his purchase of the place in 1883. A scarce Dakota Territory image. Provenance: The Thomas Minckler Collection of Western Americana
