CALONNE, Charles Alexandre de (1734-1802) -- Calonne Library. A Catalogue of an Extensive and Truly Valuable Library of Books, in Various Languages and in every Department of Literature... the Genuine Property of Mons. De Calonne, Deceased . London: Christie's, 27 July 1803. 8 o (203 x 120 mm). Modern marbled boards. Provenance : A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate). Sale catalogue of the library of Calonne (1734-1802), the French statesman, whose proposals to reform the French finances might have saved the monarchy. Exiled in 1787, he moved to England and became one of the leaders of the émigrés; to their cause he sacrificed his and his second wife's fortune. Napoléon, as Consul, in 1802, allowed him to return to France, where he died a few months later. Those of his books which he had not been forced to sell, were sold by his widow, in 1803. Not in Blogie.
