The City; or, the Physiology of London Business; with Sketches on 'Change, and at the Coffee Houses London: Groombridge & Sons, 1852. First edition. Small 8vo. vii, 172, 16pp. ads, (8)pp. ads. Contemporary brown cloth, spine rebacked in modern brown morocco, cloth lightly worn and soiled, dampstaining to top; decoratively stamped in blind and in gilt. Front and rear hinge reinforced; scattered marginal notation and underlining in pen and pencil; dampstaining along fore-edge and top edge of text (primarily to the first 18 pp. and then intermittently thereafter); scattered light creasing and soiling; ownership signatures in pen and pencil on front free endpaper. An edited, revised, and largely rewritten version of Evans' 1845 work "The City"; a descriptive and historical account of the London Stock Exchange and other financial systems and institutions, here with an additional chapter on the railway boom and bust.
